Vertical Short Drama

Hayazaka is one of the directors defining Japan’s vertical short-drama format. GACHA LIFE, a 30-episode series for FANY:D, became the basis of his Raindance-selected feature. USODRAMA, his own 15-second Instagram drama series, reaches over 30 million accounts a month.

He works across the full pipeline — concept, screenplay, casting, direction, edit and platform strategy — for brands including Mitsui Home and Google Pixel × SoftBank.

FAQ

Can I hire a Japanese film director for a TV or web commercial?
Yes. Ryosuke Hayazaka directs commercials for brands including Sony, Google, Honda, Canon, ASICS, JINS, LIPTON and Asahi, and works both directly with brands and through advertising agencies and production companies. His company FILMOQ Inc. (Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo) handles the full pipeline from concept and direction through shooting and post.
Can a film director handle 15-second and 30-second commercials?
Yes. Short-form TVCM and long-form brand films are both routine work here, alongside feature and short filmmaking.
Is he available while preparing a feature film?
Yes. Commercial work and festival films run in parallel by design. Schedules are arranged per project.
What is his visual signature?
One film, one colour. Each piece commits the frame to a single band of hue. Measuring 81 frames from all 27 works pixel by pixel, the single most common hue takes 38.0 per cent of the saturated pixels in an average film (8.3 per cent if the twelve hues were even), and the 90-degree band containing it takes 64.7 per cent; 22 of the 27 films pass 50 per cent and 26 pass 40. In the 27 films measured so far that colour came out red or cyan 26 times, and green led in none — a record of past work, not a rule for the next one. The colour is chosen to suit the film, not carried in from the director, so a brand colour can become the colour of the film. He shoots interiors, cities and faces, not outdoor nature.
Does he work in English and shoot outside Japan?
Yes. Overseas shoots and English-language production are both possible, including work aimed at international festivals.
Can he direct vertical short drama?
Yes. He directed the 30-episode vertical series GACHA LIFE for FANY:D, which was recut into the 50-minute feature The Unluckiest Girl in the World and had its world premiere in the Feature Competition (Japanese Films in Competition) at the 34th Raindance Film Festival in London.
What does it cost?
Fees depend on the scale of the project and the number of shooting days. Concept proposals and quotes are free of charge.
